About Dixie

Dixie came to BEHS in 2006, horribly emaciated and with an injury to one leg. Her foster home nursed her back to health. Her foster home discovered that despite her badly sway back (which was a congenital deformity), Dixie was broke to ride. Unfortunately Dixie’s back deterred many people from adopting her. She then met her adopter in 2009 – they adopted her and enjoyed spending time with her. Unfortunately they discovered they could not keep her. They found her a new home who adopted her, and she became a children's riding horse. That home had to return Dixie in late 2011. The 3rd time is the charm for Dixie. She has spent all of her time in foster care with Sharon. And recently Sharon’s found herself making up excuses to make her unattractive to potential adopters so she decided that she had to adopt Dixie!

Evaluation and Training

Dixie's foster mom has ridden her several times, and although she appears rusty she's doing well. Because of her sway-back, she needs a well-padded saddle so that she can be comfortable. At her former adopter’s home, she was ridden by children in a small paddock/pasture and did well. Due to her sway-back, she shouldn’t be used for gaming, jumping or hard riding but if someone gets a properly padded and fitted saddle, she could do some trail or pleasure riding.
